That’s How You Come Back Like MN8’s KG

KG, lead singer of 90s group MN8 releases first new solo music in years.

Off To A Gr8 Start

Let me take you back to the mid 90s! UK pop / r&b group MN8 are supporting Janet Jackson’s on her European tour. They were on the Bad Boys soundtrack and were happily remixed by Jodeci. All this resulted in millions of records sales worldwide. They raised to the next level and nothing blocked their pathway to the moon – so to speak and pun intended! Well, nothing except one thing.

Sony and MN8 each had a different vision for the group. By the time their second album, “Freaky”, was released, the group was at odds with Sony and were considered a “tuff act”. But all referencing to MN8 songs aside, it costs them their marketing budget, success and their record deal. The members all went their separate ways.

Dee-Tails’ Career Switch

Now, I’ve already blogged about Dee Tails before, who went into the movie business after MN8 and eventually found his place as a special effects actor, specialised in playing various creatures. But now, I finally have been given a reason to write about one of the other members.

KG’s Move

KG moved to Australia after MN8 to start a family. He’s been songwriting and producing music ever since. More recently, he’s taken charge over MN8’s social media accounts. Despite the group not being active, they have contemplated a comeback several times and keep the MN8 accounts, just in case. All members are quick to shoutout the fans still out there, but KG recently casually dropped a brand new solo track.

Testing The Waters

I don’t really get the impression he’s seriously pursuing a big solo career. Maybe he was just testing the waters, but it looked like he just wanted to share. The big surprise was the track itself. MN8 may have walked the grey areas between pop and r&b, but KG dropped a full blown r&b song called “That’s How”.

Steady Pace

“That’s How” has got a steady pace and tells the frustrating story of not getting through to a loved one, who just doesn’t realize how much they mean to you. The topic is easy to relate to and, in fact, the whole song is easy to get into, too.

A Little Something New For You

There are a lot of background harmonies and ad libs going on, which you would expect from the r&b genre. It sounds like KG has sung all of them. His voice surprised me altogether. It’s a bit rougher then I remember it from the MN8 days, which gives this song a bit of Dru Hill, K-Ci and JoJo feel, while the rest of the sound is not to be compared to these groups at all. KG just showed that there might be a start of something new.

What Did The Other Members Do After MN8?

Kule T switched to graphic design and teaching. G-Man – as far as I know – worked the business side of the music business immediately after MN8.

Fun fact! I once started a fan site for MN8, that later became their official website (up to 2000). It kickstarted a webdesign career for me.
