Sam Tsui is one of those YouTube sensations who’s built up a following of over 2 million subscribers. His YouTube success started in 2009 with producer Kurt Schneider, both in Yale at the time. They did a few videos called “College Musicals“: A parody of “High School Musical” with original music by the pair. Since then, he’s made several covers and built up his own audience. However, over the years he’s deviced a new way of covering songs: Mashups. Usually mashup versions feature vocals from one song placed over the music from another. In his case he’s developed a mix of doing a medley and mashup in his cover songs. One of the most clever ones being his duet with fellow YouTube singer Casey Breves. The two merge together the songs “Thinking Out Loud” (Ed Sheeran) and “I’m Not The Only One” (Sam Smith) in a way that it almost becomes a whole new song.

The two also got together to merge “Lean On” (Major Lazor and DJ Snake) with the classic “Lean On Me” (Bill Withers).

Sam often collaborates with other YouTube singers and has done about 10 mashups so far, but he also sings original material, which has led to the release of his full length original album “Make It Up”. He’s one to watch, or one to YouTube.
