Online Editing

Proofreading and editing is so crucial to maintain a high standard of online content quality. Sure, many times, content needs to be published quickly and this is usually when mistakes are made. However, this is where a good editor can really make a difference and not only maintain high level content throughout a website or newsletter, but also help strengthen any content strategy you may have.

I have about 20 years of experience in maintaining content from websites, as well as, more recent, experience in maintaining social media channels. Read more about my experience and my availability as a freelancer below.

Draw Up Editorial Guidelines

For any website, it’s a good idea, to write down your editorial guidelines, so the formatting of your websites’ content is consistent throughout the website. This includes the use of headlines, restrictions to the amount of words used per article, how to link to other websites, how to format images and it usually provides a few basic SEO rules to ensure the best representation of your content in a SERP.

Your editorial guide should describe what tone of voice you’d like to use of your website, how text should be formatted, and it should, most definitely, help you when you have more than one content writer or editor working on your website.

Not every page or every category of your website require the same editorial guidelines. It’s smart to describe it all for each category, if you plan to mix content, the way I do on my website.

Once content is written, it’s good to have someone else read it and check it on grammar and spelling. This process is called proofreading and an editor will use their language skills and your editorial guide to execute this task.

After proofreading, an editor will start formatting and editing content and, eventually publish it to your website. For the best results, it’s a good idea to not have the writer edit themselves. A fresh pair of eyes is usually able to spot so much more, but, in many cases, the content creator is also the editor.

My experience with online editing

When I started creating websites for the Internet in 1995 or 1996, there was no such thing as WordPress or any other CMS (Content Management System) for that matter, so editing content was part of my day job as a webdesigner.

The client, actually, always knew their content would be read and any mistakes would be removed before the content was published to the web. Some clients even preferred to keep it this way, even when they were able to maintain the content themselves.

Many Content Topics

It’s a good thing, I’m not only curious, but I am versatile too, ‘cos during my years in Nora Tol Virtual Publishing, I’ve maintained content of all kinds and on all sorts of topics; showbizz marketing, theatre plays, real estate, medical coordination, music, mindfulness, life coaching, Lelystad city and much more.

Lead Content Editor

After Nora Tol Virtual Publishing, I started working for Staples Netherlands for which I wrote product descriptions in all product categories: office, tech, furniture, services, ink and toners, and more. You can check some of my work here. Within 6 months of working for Staples, I became their Lead Content Editor, editing and leading two other editors. Due to my technical background this also led to me getting involved in many projects to improve content, as well as to test third party content. Later, I also started writing marketing copy for their social media channels and photoshopped many of the social media posts.

Before starting ElNorado Productions, I shortly worked as Lead Content Editor for There I wrote copy about all their daily deals and maintained their daily newsletter.
