Magic Of The Shine

The song “Magic Of The Shine” was written on a hip hop beat intended for a rapper I built a website for. He challenged me to write lyrics on the music from his album, and so I did! It was just for some good fun and experience.

Lyrics

VERSE 1:
You got your dollar in your pocket
You got your millions sitting on the bank
You count your interest, as you should now
You’re a self acclaimed self made man
All the women flock like birds to you
Like your honey to a bee is how they flirt with you
Make you feel like you’re something else but you
Already believed that yourself

CHANGE:
Is all the high life starting to mess with your head?
Do you still run the game or has it taken over instead?
Are you sure your followers are still thinking of your best?
Or is all the glamour starting to cloud their judgment?

CHORUS
If you wear your rocks in sight
You know they attract the light
All the eyes are on the attire
It’s the magic of the shine
If you step up into the light
They’re on you all the time
People get stardust in their eyes
It’s the magic of the shine

VERSE 2:
You learn quickly how to deal with
People saying they’re the ones you can get real with
Those pretenders, get them in check
Behind the scenes you must be covering your own back
Then there’s the case of what you say
The press rephrases and publishes their own way
Your intentions to keep control
Will soon be going up in smoke

CHANGE:
When you go clubbing your security calls ahead
Doors unlock to the VIP room for you and all your friends
The new people that you meet are few and in a glance
Besides your followers there’s really no one else

REPEAT CHORUS 2x

The Story Behind The Song

How Did The Song Come About?

Rapper Silky Dredd was working on his debut album – I don’t know if it actually ever got released, but I’d built his website for him. He knew I wrote song lyrics and gave me the music for his album to get creative on. I think he just wanted to see what I’d come up with. I think I wrote lyrics on about 5 of his instrumentals.

Inspiration

I tried to take inspiration from the hip hop scene, at the time. This was 2004. So, rappers like P. Diddy, who also turned business man.

However, I’d also just seen a special about Britney Spears. It showed clips of her going shopping, which could never be done spontaneously. The store had to get shut down for her. Going to clubs was pretty much the same. She couldn’t access the regular parts of the clubs, but was always in the VIP room with other celebs. I just started to wonder how she would meet new people. It looked kind of caged in. That’s what I refer to in the second verse of the song.

What’s The Song About?

It’s about how people get caught up in fame and fortune. How it all looks from the outside.

Release

I think I uploaded the song to my website, at the time, ReverbNation and MySpace. This was probably in 2005. It’s never been an official release or anything. Just more like sharing of the songwriting that I was doing.

Later, my vocal coach Kim Pendjol offered to record it with her vocal, so I’d have a better version to shop around with. That’s how she ended up on it. You can hear her version below.
