Even though Mariah Carey is rumoured to have recorded a diss about her ex-husband Nick Cannon, her new single “Infinity” describes nothing more than the ‘art of letting go’. Many artists use a lot of their own personal life in the songs they write, but not all put it out there as clearly. There’s something about Mariah Carey’s personal circumstances that make this song very fitting for her life, even when you’re viewing it from a distance. It gives an extra dimension to the song, knowing this is what she’s feeling right at this very minute and it’s not just a story to tell.

The song is the first single released on Sony, having gone back to her roots. And even though the track puts those 90s high notes, she became famous for, on the foreground again, it doesn’t reveal a different sound for the new era, which I had silently hoped for. In fact, you can hear the high note doesn’t come as easily for the singer as it did before. A thing she’s been criticised for these past years.

It all probably doesn’t matter for Mariah Carey as her Las Vegas residency will begin today, with her first show on May 6th, and somehow, even when all fails, she still manages to cash in.
