Kesha Explains Why She Didn’t Take Her Freedom Back

Published April 4th 2016

On her own Instagram account, Kesha made it known yesterday that she was only allowed back her freedom, if she had publicly taken back her own words about being raped by Dr. Luke. Everybody is assuming the party who offered her her freedom back – under these terms – is Sony Music.

Sony was quick to make it known that it sees itself as an innocent bystander in all of this, falling victim to the legal battles between their producer Dr. Luke and their artist, Kesha. Holding them hostage as much as Kesha. They are, though, very clearly siding with Dr. Luke.

Interview With Kesha’s Mother

After the ruling of her lawsuit to request a release  from her contract with Dr. Luke – which was denied by a New York judge –  Sony was just as quick to point out that they had offered to record without Dr. Luke. Kesha mother, Bebe Sebert, had already released more details about this offer in an exclusive interview with Billboard, at the beginning of March. The offer would not really set her free from Dr. Luke at all:  “Kesha’s allowed to work with another producer, but Luke gets to approve them. He gets to approve of anyone she works with. He has final say over everything.”  (source: Billboard)

Dr. Luke’s lawyer left out the last detail of this deal, but has also confirmed that Kesha could work with other producers if she wanted to. The interview with Bebe, clearly shows, the mental abuse Kesha’s been suffering from Dr. Luke, had been all about control anyway and Kesha, understandably,  wants to be freed from it all.

Does Sony Even Care?

As Sony, clearly, doesn’t seem to care what the truth is about Dr. Luke, it sounds to me, like Dr. Luke might have been the one making the offer under the terms suggested by Kesha in her post. He seems to have the most to gain with the clearing of his name.

Adverts By UltraViolet

In the meantime, fans have offered Sony a petition signed by over 410,000 people to release Kesha from her contract and drop Dr. Luke. Also, women’s rights organization, UltraViolet, has been taking out ads in newspapers and Pandora to also keep the pressure going on the label.

UltraViolet has also started their own petition in this case.

First Performance?

Kesha is trying to pick up her music career, while all of this is going on. She’s already mentioned, on Instagram, she’s working on new music and now she is announced as the headline act for the PickAxe Summerfest on June 18th. The festival is held at the Bowling Green Ballpark, Kentucky. It’s the first performance announce since the lawsuit.
