Bjork’s personal call to save Iceland

Björk surprised many festival goers, two days ago, by pulling out of headlining at the Iceland Airwaves festival, but showing up anyway to hold a press conference.

The topic of which was to join protests against the built of power plants and dams, mostly to deliver electricity to the UK. These builds would destroy the last of the untouched Icelandic highlands and threaten its wildlife. Bjork, dropping a new album on the same day, found this more important than promoting her upcoming album “Vulnicura Strings” (with acoustic versions and remixes of her “Vulnicura” album at the beginning of the year).

Her personal call for action has had an amazing impact, as all press have picked up the story.

Bjork has cancelled all of her remaining tour dates for 2015, in order to promote Gaetum Gardsins (Promote The Park), who want to turn the highlands into a wildlife national park instead of the government’s plans to turn it into a high power plant.

The Icelandic government is set to meet with the UK in 11 days to talk about delivering energy through an undersea cable. Bjork explained that this potential deal would only supply the UK with 10% of its power, while Iceland’s wildlife would extinct over it.

It’ll be interesting to see how much impact Bjork’s appeal and idea will have. From the outside, I can imagine, she’s a powerful Icelander.

Promote The Park have set up a website and a Facebook page on which you can show them support.

“Vulnicura Strings” will be released December 4th, 2015.
