Solange is stuck between a rock and a hard place. As “the sister of”, you’re being watched closely. Especially when you, too, are in the same business. Even more so when your sister is the absolute top of that business.
In such a case, you know people will draw comparison and you have some hefty expectations to meet, which they (the critics) probably won’t allow you to meet. And you know it. But because you’re “the sister of” you can’t put out any crap whatsoever anyway. There’s no messing about at all.
Solange’s new album is the first album that has pulled her away from all of this pressure and has gotten her acceptance as an artist in her own right. As soon as “A Seat at the Table” was released, the album became talk of the town. Throughout all of last weekend, I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about this album, so of course I had to check it out as well.
