How the times have changed. As you probably know, I grew up being a Madonna fan – not exactly the most clean cut and innocent woman to idolize.
Nevertheless, I grew up in a time where the “Justify My Love” video was only shown on Dutch TV one time – around 7pm – and it had a lot of fair warning in advance. BBC’s Top Of The Pops always started the “Vogue” video midway through to avoid showing bare boobs.
Test The Limits
However, now we live in a time where we don’t get entertainment offered to us, but we look for our own. We have more places to look and less people are making decisions about how to filter it for you. As people we think more freely now. We have – and still are – pushing all boundaries.
Send Your Private Videos
For instance, Dutch rock band Di-Rect recently called the help of the public to send their private sex videos to the band. They want to use it in their new video. They claim they’re not going to make anything X-rated – they want the video to get airplay and we don’t think that freely – but still they are testing how far they can take it. As has Madonna over the years. And so does everyone else.
We know that sex sells and every artist, great or small, seems to find it necessary to throw it in the mix, at some point.
Whatever Sells
For female artists, looks have become a marketing tool. It’s more about the sex appeal or how you manage to get a lot of people think of you as sexy. It’s a thing that will go further and further. Blurring the lines even more.
What’s Too Much?
This is exactly what’s sparked a ‘thing’ between Bette Midler and Ariana Grande on Twitter.
