Kesha released her hit song, “Tik Tok”, just five years ago and went on to sell 55 million copies of her music since. She became a household name, but the rise to fame was troubled.

Lawsuits

Last year, Kesha checked into rehab for the treatment of an eating disorder. Once out, she filed a lawsuit against her producer and label owner, Dr Luke, accusing him of drugging her, sexual assault en emotional abuse, which caused her eating disorder. She also wanted out of her contract with him.

Dr. Luke then filed a lawsuit against Kesha for stating false claims, just to try to get out of her contract. Later, Kesha filed another lawsuit against Sony Music for turning a blind eye.

A Lock On The Music Career

Recently, it was reported that all these legal battles could be a lengthy ongoing thing, effectively ending her music career. During these legal actions, Kesha is not allowed to perform with her material, nor release any new music.

JoJo’s Career Has Been On Lockdown Too

Someone who knows exactly what that’s like is JoJo. At age 14 she was the youngest female singer to ever have a Billboard #1 hit single. The break up song, “Leave (Get Out)”, introduced the world to a talented R&B singer, who was destined for a big career.

She had a deal with Blackground Records for seven albums, but by the time the third album was due for release, problems began. The label had changed owners and, eventually, even lost their distribution deal with Interscope to distribute the album. To no fault of her own, Jojo was on lockdown musically since 2006.

In 2009 she started filing lawsuits to be set free from her contract. Fans even supported her on Twitter with a hashtag #freeJoJo. Something, Kesha fans are now doing for her with #FreedomForKesha.

Jojo didn’t sit around, doing nothing, she used mixtapes and Internet to still be able to let people hear her voice every once in a while, but in the meantime, was working hard on an acting career instead.

Back With A Tringle

Only in 2014, the Blackground label and JoJo settled out of court, and a statement was released that JoJo signed to Atlantic Records. JoJo’s now back with a vengeance, releasing 3 singles at once (a “tringle” as she calls it): The dance track “When Love Hurts”, a ballad “Say Love” and the mid tempo “Save My Soul”.

Time will tell how it will pan out for Kesha.
