[blog] Looking At Musician Platforms, part 2: RadioAirplay.com/Jango

Published April 12th 2016

Like many other artists, I’ve been trying all kinds of websites to promote myself in an attempt to get paid for the music that I love to make. In a series of blogs, I’ll be sharing with you how I’ve experienced some of these platforms. This series will feature ReverbNation, RadioAirplay.com/Jango, Music Clout, Coast 2 Coast, MusicXray and InMusik.

Radio Airplay

Do they really get you radio airplay?

RadioAirplay.com/Jango

A few years ago, I started working with TuneCore to distribute my music to online music stores and streaming services. One of their partners was RadioAirplay.com, so I immediately got offered a free account there. They were supposed to get my music played on more online radio.

Stupidly, I was thinking I would then see a return from these plays come back to me through TuneCore, but that is not how it works. It is a platform of its own, with no pays per stream going back to the artist.

At first, it seemed to supply music to various online radio stations, but, currently, it looks like they are simply the management tool for Jango.com. Even though, they are still listing other partners on their website.

Free Acccount

With a (free) account, you can add your music to Jango. For each song you can set campaign settings. This means you can assign attributes to the song by comparing your sound to that of a popular artist. Your song is then matched to radio stations (or Jango playlists) who are playing that popular artist, to also play your track.

You need credits to be able to get the song played though. Every once in a while, you get 10 for free, but if you want to, you can buy more. I never have.

People listening to Jango can like your song, become your fan and sign up to your bulletins or mass e-mails (newsletter), which you all manage from the RadioAirplay.com website.

Profile

Just like any other platform, RadioAirplay.com offers you a profile page. I have seriously never heard anybody checking that out. All interaction with my audience seems to happen on Jango. I don’t put any effort in the profile page anymore.

RadioAirplay.com Recent Updates

RadioAirplay.com has recently changed their offerings. When I joined, a few years, I could see my fans’ e-mail addresses, mass e-mail them, send bulletins, see reports etc. All for free. Over the years, I had uploaded about 4 songs, but since their change, only 1 song is still active. All of the previously mentioned functions have become available to paying members only.

The only interesting new thing, is that Jango listeners can now tip artists with Neucoins. This could perhaps be interesting down the line, when you can spend this on other websites. For now, I think you could potentially raise more money starting a Gofundme campaign.

Would I Pay For A Subscription?

No. In fact, I think this website would have not gotten that much attention from me, if it hadn’t been for their notifications about my free credits. That’s the only thing that has kept me on board, so far.

Results

Since I’ve started on RadioAirplay.com  (I think in 2012), I’ve only gotten about 25 fans there. I’ve received a few likes on my tracks, but that’s about it. I’ve had the biggest response at the beginning, when it looked like there were more online radio stations connected to the system.

I’ve send a few mass e-mails to my fans on the platform, which has gotten me some more visits on my website, but it’s not been a tool that’s convinced to put my time and money into it.
