Adele’s staggering sales numbers and how that translates in earnings

In the split of music royalty revenue, a songwriter is at the bottom to get earnings from a song. It’s already reported that the share of an upcoming songwriter, on a major streaming hit, still means the songwriter can’t eat. This is, however, not the case for the lucky, and usually established songwriters,  who got to work with Adele on her latest album, “25”.

Adele’s Album’s Earnings Breakdown

Adele’s comeback was already expected to be huge and even more so, it was expected to boost the whole music industry.

“25” has already sold 8.13 million copies in the US alone. Based on these figures, Billboard decided to calculate how much the songwriters involved have earned for their work on the album.

Altogether, 16 people co-wrote on the tracks with Adele and their earnings range from $45,000 to $2.4 million.

The Adele Effect

It’s very clear that Adele can reach the sales numbers in everything that others don’t seem to come anywhere near to. Even though some are now coming close when you look at it from a weekly perspective. For instance, Future’s “Evol” album only sold 2,000 copies less than Adele’s last week.

With her album not being available on streaming services, people are forced to buy the album one way or the other. That’s even meant she’s leading old fashioned vinyl sales.

Even the video of her appearance in James Corden’s Car Karaoke has broken YouTube records recently. It’s the most viewed Late Night item on YouTube, with over 70 million views. I do have to admit, it is a classic.
