David Bowie

David Bowie’s artistry has brought forth many things; his movies, music, for instance. But he was also an avid collector of art and had built up an impressive art collection throughout his life. The total collection contained over 400 pieces. Most pieces were abstract paintings, but Bowie had an extreme passion for contemporary pieces and some modern art.

Display in London

The whole Bowie collection was on public display in London from November 1st to November 10th 2016, which was visited by over 55,000 people who flew in from everywhere in the world.

Auction

Last week the collection was auctioned off. It was expected that it would raise $13 million with the biggest amount expected to be raised by a Jean-Michel Basquiat 1984 painting (about $3.3 million to $4.6 million).

After 3 nights of auctioning, the collection ended up raising a total of $41.1 million. The Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Air Power” ended up selling for almost twice the expected amount and there were two other grand sales (including another Basquiat).
